Image Galleries for React and Tailwind

A gallery lives or dies by how it handles real images in mixed sizes. Look for steady layouts, quick loading and a sensible view on small screens. If people will open images larger, try that with the keyboard too. Install one with a single command, then feed it your own photos and let the work do the talking. Keep every caption short and useful.

About image galleries

Image gallery components show many pictures well: even grids, masonry layouts that keep each image's shape, carousels with thumbnails, lightboxes that open an image full screen with zoom and swipe, and before and after sliders.

Serve each image at the size it's shown, in modern formats, and lazy load everything below the fold. Reserve space with aspect ratios so nothing jumps, give every image alt text, and make the lightbox work with arrow keys, Escape and swipes.

Frequently asked questions

Lay images out in a CSS grid or masonry columns, use an optimised image component with width, height and lazy loading, and open a lightbox on click.

CSS columns are the simplest, though order runs down each column. A small script or CSS grid with spans keeps left to right order with varied heights.

Open a full screen dialog showing the clicked image large, with next and previous controls, arrow key and swipe support, and Escape to close.

Serve resized images in WebP or AVIF with srcset, lazy load anything off screen and give each image dimensions so the layout is reserved.

A short description of what each image shows. Purely decorative images can have empty alt text, but gallery images rarely are.

For large photo collections it can work, with real links for pages behind it. For portfolios, a curated grid is better.

Use two columns or a single column of large images, swipe gestures in the lightbox and tap targets big enough to open each image.
